My Favorite Italian Itinerary of All Time

Our train from Zurich to Como – Amazing!

This is the itinerary for our first trip to Italy and after many other visits, it is still one of our favorites. It’s especially good for first timers…

Here is the snap shot. Read on for all The Details:

  • Fly into Zurich, Switzerland – one night in Zurich
  • Train through the Alps to Lake Como, Italy – two nights
  • Train from Como to Venice – two nights
  • Train from Venice to Siena – two nights
  • Train from Siena to Florence – two nights
  • Train from Florence to Rome – two nights

We took a train back to Zurich for our return flight. Rookie mistake!! Do an open-jaw and fly home from Rome. 10 days is about right for us. We’ve done 13 days but just seems too long. We’ve noticed that we are usually ready to head home by day 10 regardless of where we are.

I think you can do this trip for two for $5000 depending on what kind of deal you can get on flights. You would need to carefully watch your expenses. As we get older we spend more to take a lazier approach – for example we might higher a driver vs. taking public transportation. We just did 13 days in Italy for $7,000, we were fairly generous with our spending.
